Shopify Planet focuses on carbon removal, rather than offsetting carbon with forest protection. To do this, they work with high-impact companies like Running Tide and Remora through the Shopify Sustainability Fund to make a real impact on our Earth.
Running Tide combines Biomass Sinking, safely storing carbon in the deep ocean for centuries, and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, transforming atmospheric CO2 into stable dissolved inorganic carbon, where it remains for centuries to millennia.
Remora's mission is to build a device that captures a semi-truck’s carbon emissions directly from the tailpipe. They'll sell the CO2 to end-users, and share that revenue with customers, so the device will create a new revenue stream while reducing emissions.
Through Greenspark, we contribute to the Eden Reforestation Project which helped plant over 500 million trees with roughly 20 million trees planted each month.

Deforestation is a fundamental risk for nearly 1.6 billion people worldwide who depend on forests for their livelihood. Land clearing for agricultural use, mining, commercial activity, logging, wildfires, and fuelwood harvesting all contribute to the deforestation of these vital habitats. The unsustainable use of forest land is a vicious cycle that can lead to further soil erosion, desertification, increased flooding and ultimately reduced agricultural productivity, putting further pressure on limited resources.
